How to start with PictureThis
Your first small win
Use the maker’s download link. Read or dismiss the subscription offer before agreeing to anything. Photograph a familiar plant in good light and compare the suggested name with its label. If you only want a free first experiment, try Seek instead.
Price & what is included
Free download with in-app purchases. The United States iPhone listing includes a $39.99 Pro purchase, but does not label its billing period in that list. Offers vary: check the price, renewal period, and trial terms on your own purchase screen. Seek is a free alternative.
Device details
iPhone and iPad with iOS/iPadOS 15 or later in the checked listing; Android requirements appear in Google Play.
Good to know
Plant identification and care suggestions can be wrong. Do not use an identification to decide whether a plant is safe to eat. A free download does not mean every feature is free.

How to start with Microsoft Copilot
Your first small win
Open the official Copilot website or app. Try, “Give me three indoor activities for a rainy afternoon with a friend. Keep the list short and low-cost.” Choose one and ask for a short materials list.
Price & what is included
Free access is available; paid subscriptions and Microsoft 365 features have separate requirements. Check your account’s offer before paying.
Device details
Web browsers and supported iPhone, iPad, and Android apps. The exact experience depends on the account and app version.
Good to know
Check practical details such as opening hours, prices, and availability yourself. Work accounts and personal accounts may offer different features.
Gay’s first camera conversation described a file box. The interesting next step is asking it to help with something. With regular Google Lens, take a photo and choose the available search, text, or translation tools. Where Search Live is available in the Google app on iPhone or Android, you can ask spoken follow-up questions while sharing the camera.
Start with one object and one question. These are suggested experiments, not claims that Gay has tested them all. Search Live availability and controls vary; it is not the same as ordinary Lens image search and is not available on iPad.
The overflowing file box
“Suggest three ways to organize these dividers. Start with the easiest.”
Then: “Give me one short label I could use.”
The tiny instruction sheet
“Read these instructions aloud. Explain just the first step, then wait while I try.”
Use an ordinary household item for practice. In Lens’s text tools, you can also select printed text and copy it into a note.
The mysterious remote
“Which button might turn on captions? Tell me what the button looks like.”
Compare the answer with the actual button and your device’s manual.
The unlabeled kitchen gadget
“What might this be used for? Help me find the maker’s instructions.”
Show another angle if the first guess seems wrong.
The sign in another language
Use Lens’s translation option on visible text. Or ask: “What does this sign say?”
Try a short sample before relying on a complicated sign.
The mug you wish you had two of
Use Lens to look for visually similar items.
A similar picture does not prove the same maker, size, or quality.
Other ideas: ask for a tentative plant identification; show an ordinary assembly step; or ask whether your glasses are visible on the table. A camera cannot see inside a closed drawer or know where you left something yesterday. Plant guesses do not establish what is safe to eat.
Useful words to keep handy: “Explain that more simply.” “Give me another idea.” “Wait while I try.”
Before turning on the camera, move private paperwork out of view. Gay’s scene included a notepad with an email address—a good reminder that the camera sees the background too. Check important text, numbers, and suggested buttons yourself.
A large photo library? You can still try Lens today.
Google Photos and Google Lens do different jobs. Photos can back up, organize, and search a collection. Lens can search what is in a picture or in front of your camera. You do not have to wait for years of photographs to upload before trying Lens.
For Photos, review backup choices and available storage first. A Google account’s free 15 gigabytes is shared with Gmail and Drive. Start with a small album. Seeing a photo in the app does not prove it is backed up; check backup status before deleting anything or using storage cleanup.
No. Use the device filter as a starting point, then read the device details. Some Apple features need a particular model or software version; some Google tools are Android-only. A website working on your phone does not mean it has a separate phone app.
Does “free download” mean free to use?
Not always. An app can be free to install while charging for features or renewing a trial into a subscription. Read the price and renewal terms before accepting an offer. The guide separates free core options, hardware purchases, eligibility-based services, and paid or trial offers.
How do I know I am getting the real app?
Follow the official maker links in each entry, then use that maker’s App Store or Google Play link. Check the developer’s name before installing. Lookalike names and sponsored search results are not the same as the official app.
Use Gay’s notebook approach: record your device and date, what you wanted to do, which steps you tried, what happened, where you got stuck, and what helped. Add one tip for next time and what you have not tried yet. An unfinished attempt can still teach you something useful.
Pick one. Give it a try.
You do not need to become an expert before doing something useful—or something fun.
